5 Tips on How to Repair Hair From Summer Damage

Spend a little bit too much time at the beach? Laid out too long every weekend? Lots of outside time during the summer is always a blast (well, except when it rains all summer), but it often gives ample time for the sun and weather conditions to work your hair over like a flock of angry seagulls! If you didn’t take any steps to actively protect your hair when you hit the ocean it’s going to be much worse for you. However, not all is lost, so don’t despair! We’re here to give you some tips on how to repair hair from the hazards of the summer sun.

1. Inspect the Hair

how to fix damaged hairBefore you can get to work on your recovery, you have to inspect your hair. All hair isn’t going to react to summertime the same way, nor is all your hair going to have the same amount of damage. Check your hair in three separate places – at the root, in the middle, and on the tips. Is it brittle and dehydrated?

To repair hair from the damage of sun, chlorine, and wind, we recommend a good shampoo. Bain Après-Soleil by Kerastase provides a photo-defense filter designed to absorb UV rays during sun exposure that will prevent deterioration of the hair fiber. This shampoo also nurtures and repair hair fibers and easily detangles one’s hair while providing long-lasting softness. Suddenly your extra day in the pool was worth it again!

2. Hair Mask

If you inspected your hair and it looks really dull, has split ends, or is dried out in spots, you may be able to fix it with a simple hair mask. Hair masks are a great way to restore vitality to your hair while strengthening your hair fiber. Also, it will smooth and protect the surface of your hair as your recovery process continues.

3. Protecting Spray

You can’t just hide indoors while your hair recovers. At some point you’ll have to go outside even though every one of your hair follicles is screaming at you to hide in bed. To further protect you from what the sun and pool/ocean water did to your follicles, we recommend a protecting spray with UVA and UVB protection.

Huile Celeste from Kerastase is fabulous. Not only does it aid with protection from the sun, it also has Macadamia oil which prevents hair from becoming dry. It even has reflective micro-particles that will enhance the shine of your hair for an amazing look!

4. Regular Haircuts

Undoubtedly after a summer full of scooter rides and ocean breeze, your hair has been whipped around more than the Buried Treasure drinks you had every night! As a result, you have split ends, which can cause more trouble down the road. They can even actively work against all the recovery steps you’ve taken so far. Come in for a haircut at Jyl Craven Hair Design  to take them off…and keep them off!

5. Take Care of Colored Hair

Colored hair has an even rougher time when it comes to sun, wind, and chlorine damage from summertime fun. The longer you go without a touch-up of your color the more work it will take to get it fully recovered.

First, make sure you’re using one of Kerastase’s colored hair protection products to keep your locks from losing any luster. Then, at the end of summer vacation or as soon as possible, come in for a touch-up at Jyl Craven Hair Design to get your color back to where it needs to be!

So dish! Where did you go this summer… and did your hair get any summer damage?
